Chapter 2 : The Double-Headed Eagle Emblem
**Spring, 1480. Venice, Republic of Venice.**
Leonardo led his two assistants, Marco and Paolo, following the guard who had brought the news toward the western gate of the city. Luciano, who had already stepped into the tavern, hesitated for a moment before turning back and catching up. "Grey Falcon, I''m coming too..."
Outside the city gate, a crowd of onlookers had already gathered.
"Constable Leonardo." Two guards, Antonio and Giovanni, had arrived first and ordered several guards to cordon off a small grove by the side of the main road.
"What''s the situation?" Leonardo asked as he approached.
"Looks like a feud among the nobility." Giovanni led Leonardo into the grove. As soon as they entered the bamboo grove, Leonardo caught a whiff of a strange odor and frowned slightly. Not far away, bodies lay scattered on the ground, each killed by a single precise thrust through the heart. Interestingly, those killed didn''t appear to be common folk—they all wore dark cloaks and carried swords.
"A private feud, perhaps." A voice came from above. Leonardo looked up helplessly to see Luciano standing on the slender, flexible stem of a bamboo plant, looking down.
Marco and Paolo stared at Luciano, mouths agape, before finally managing to say, "Sir Luciano."
Luciano smiled at them, then turned to Leonardo. "Grey Falcon, the sword technique used belongs to the Silver Moon Society."
Leonardo looked up at him in surprise. "How do you know? Besides, doesn''t the Silver Moon Society use rapiers? They''ve switched to longswords?"
Luciano blinked at him, smiling mysteriously. "Believe it or not, as you wish."
Seeing Luciano''s enigmatic expression, Leonardo nodded to Marco and Paolo, signaling them to secure the scene. Then he leaped up, grabbed Luciano, and pulled him deeper into the grove.
When they reached a secluded spot, they landed. Luciano snatched his cloak back. "Be gentle with it. My sister-in-law just made this cloak. If it gets damaged, I''ll be in trouble when I return."
"Stop being cryptic. Tell me," Leonardo glared at him. "How do you know this sword technique is from the Silver Moon Society?"
Luciano straightened his cloak, adopting a serious expression. "The Silver Moon Society was originally a social club for young nobles, but over the years, it''s evolved into something more... complex. Their members practice a unique sword technique—a thrust that pierces the heart with a single precise strike. Look at the wounds on those bodies. The angle, the depth, the precision—it''s unmistakably their work."
"But why would they switch from rapiers to longswords?" Leonardo asked, his brow furrowed.
"That''s what we need to find out." Luciano''s expression grew serious. "And there''s something else. Look at this."
He pulled a small object from his pocket and handed it to Leonardo. It was a silver emblem, intricately carved with a double-headed eagle.
"Where did you find this?" Leonardo examined the emblem closely.
"On one of the bodies," Luciano said. "It was hidden in the lining of his cloak. The double-headed eagle... that''s not a symbol used by the Silver Moon Society. At least, not openly."
Leonardo turned the emblem over in his hand. The craftsmanship was exquisite, the silver polished to a high shine. On the reverse side was an inscription in Latin: "Sic Parvis Magna" — Greatness from Small Beginnings.
"This is a family motto," Leonardo murmured. "But whose?"
"That''s the question," Luciano said. "And why would someone from the Silver Moon Society carry an emblem with another family''s motto?"
They returned to the crime scene. Leonardo ordered his men to carefully examine each body, looking for more clues. As they worked, a young nobleman approached, his face pale with shock.
"Constable Leonardo," he stammered. "I... I know one of them."
Leonardo looked at the young man. "Who are you?"
"Federico de'' Medici," the young man replied. "My family... we have business with the Medici Bank. That man there," he pointed to one of the bodies, "is Giovanni Rossi. He''s... he was a member of the Silver Moon Society."
Luciano and Leonardo exchanged glances. "How do you know he was a member?" Leonardo asked.
Federico swallowed hard. "I... I attended one of their gatherings. My father insisted I join. He said it was important for business connections. But I never thought... I never thought it would come to this."
"Tell us about the Silver Moon Society," Luciano said, his voice gentle but firm.
Federico took a deep breath. "It started as a literary society. Young nobles would gather to discuss poetry, philosophy, art. But over time... it changed. The discussions became more political. There were whispers of... of wanting to change Venice, to purify it of corruption."
"Purify it how?" Leonardo pressed.
"I don''t know the details," Federico said, shaking his head. "I stopped attending after the third meeting. The atmosphere... it became too intense. There was talk of sacrifice for the greater good, of removing those who stood in the way of progress."
Luciano''s eyes narrowed. "And the double-headed eagle emblem? Have you seen that before?"
Federico thought for a moment. "Yes... I think so. At one of the meetings, the leader—he never gave his name, we just called him ''The Guide''—he wore a ring with that symbol. I remember because it seemed... out of place. The Silver Moon Society uses a crescent moon as their symbol. The double-headed eagle... that''s more associated with ancient Roman families, or... or the Eastern Empire."
"Byzantium," Leonardo murmured. "The double-headed eagle was the symbol of the Palaiologos dynasty."
"Exactly," Federico said. "But what would a Byzantine symbol have to do with a Venetian noble society?"
"That''s what we need to find out," Luciano said. He turned to Leonardo. "We should search the bodies more thoroughly. If one of them had this emblem, others might have clues too."
As they resumed their search, Marco called out. "Constable! Over here!"
They hurried to where Marco was kneeling beside one of the bodies. In the dead man''s hand was a piece of parchment, tightly clenched. Carefully, Leonardo pried it open.
The parchment contained a list of names, written in elegant script. At the top was the title: "Purification List." Below were about a dozen names, including several prominent Venetian nobles and merchants.
"Purification..." Luciano repeated the word slowly. "That matches what Federico said about purifying Venice."
Leonardo scanned the list, his expression growing grim. "Some of these men are members of the Great Council. Others are wealthy merchants. What connects them?"
"Perhaps they''re all seen as obstacles to whatever the Silver Moon Society wants to achieve," Luciano suggested.
"Or perhaps they''re targets," Leonardo said quietly.
Just then, Paolo called from another part of the grove. "Sir! I found something else!"
They joined Paolo, who was pointing at the base of a large oak tree. Carved into the bark was a symbol: a crescent moon with a sword through it.
"The Silver Moon Society''s symbol," Luciano confirmed. "But with a sword through it. That''s new."
"Maybe it represents their shift from discussion to action," Leonardo said. "From words to weapons."
As they examined the carving, Leonardo noticed something glinting in the grass nearby. He bent down and picked up a small, ornate key.
"This looks like it belongs to a strongbox or a private cabinet," he said, examining the key. It was made of bronze, with intricate filigree work. On the bow was engraved a tiny double-headed eagle.
"Another connection to the emblem," Luciano noted. "Whoever dropped this key is connected to both the Silver Moon Society and whatever the double-headed eagle represents."
Leonardo pocketed the key. "We need to identify all the victims. And we need to find out who they were meeting here, and why."
As they prepared to leave, Luciano pulled Leonardo aside. "There''s something you should know," he said quietly. "The Silver Moon Society... they''re not just a group of disgruntled nobles. There are rumors that they have connections to... to darker things."
"What kind of darker things?" Leonardo asked.
"Ancient rituals," Luciano said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Things that were supposed to be forgotten. The double-headed eagle... it''s not just a Byzantine symbol. In certain circles, it represents a connection to... to powers that shouldn''t be meddled with."
Leonardo stared at him. "You''re talking about heresy."
"Worse than heresy," Luciano said. "Things that the Church doesn''t even acknowledge, because acknowledging them would give them power."
Before Leonardo could respond, a commotion broke out at the edge of the grove. A group of armed men had arrived, led by a man in the uniform of the Venetian Guard.
"Stand aside!" the man commanded. "This area is now under the jurisdiction of the Guard!"
Leonardo stepped forward. "I am Constable Leonardo de Monte. This is my investigation."
The man sneered. "Not anymore. Orders from above. The Guard is taking over. This is a matter of state security."
Luciano moved to stand beside Leonardo. "State security? Since when does the Guard investigate noble feuds?"
"Since it became clear that this is more than just a feud," the man said. "Now step aside, or I''ll have you arrested for obstructing official duties."
Leonardo''s jaw tightened, but he knew better than to openly defy the Guard. He nodded to his men. "Stand down. Let them through."
As the Guard soldiers began taking control of the scene, the commander approached Leonardo. "You''ll hand over all evidence you''ve collected."
Reluctantly, Leonardo handed over the emblem and the parchment. But he kept the key hidden in his pocket.
"Anything else?" the commander asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
"That''s all," Leonardo said evenly.
The commander nodded, then turned to his men. "Secure the area! No one enters or leaves without my permission!"
As they were forced to leave, Luciano leaned close to Leonardo. "The key," he whispered. "You kept it."
"Something tells me we''ll need it," Leonardo replied quietly. "And something tells me the Guard isn''t interested in finding the truth."
They walked back toward the city, the weight of the investigation heavy on their shoulders. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the Venetian landscape.
"So what now?" Luciano asked.
"Now we find out what that key opens," Leonardo said. "And we find out why the Guard is so interested in covering up this investigation."
Luciano smiled, a glint of excitement in his eyes. "I do love a good mystery."
Leonardo gave him a sidelong glance. "This isn''t a game, Luciano. People are dead. And if what you say about ancient rituals is true... more people could die."
"I know," Luciano said, his expression turning serious. "That''s why we need to solve this. Before whoever is behind it strikes again."
As they reached the city gates, Leonardo paused. "Meet me at my office tonight. We need to plan our next move."
Luciano nodded. "I''ll be there. And I''ll bring that Tuscan wine I promised."
Leonardo managed a small smile. "Just what I need. Wine and conspiracy."
"Welcome to Venice," Luciano said with a wry smile. "Where every shadow hides a secret, and every secret has a price."
They parted ways, each lost in thought. The investigation had just begun, but already it was clear that they were dealing with something far more dangerous than a simple noble feud. The Silver Moon Society, the double-headed eagle emblem, the Guard''s sudden interest—all pieces of a puzzle that seemed to grow more complex with each passing moment.
And somewhere in the shadows of Venice, someone was watching. Someone who knew the truth behind the deaths in the grove. Someone who had plans for Venice—plans that involved purification, sacrifice, and a new order rising from the ashes of the old.
